Ruth Platt

Ruth Platt read English at Oxford, from a comprehensive school. Most recently Ruth directed a block of CALL THE MIDWIFE. Her BFI funded feature, Martyrs Lane, was released on Shudder in 2021. It won the Rising Star award at Fantasia Film Festival and was nominated for the Cheval Noir. Ruth is currently developing a TV series with Hilary Salmon’s production company, The Lighthouse, and is developing film projects with Independent and Silver Salt Films.
Her short film, The Heart Fails Without Warning, adapted from a Hilary Mantel short story, screened at multiple international festivals. Her first, micro budget, feature, The Lesson, was the only female made feature at FrightFest 2015 and picked up distribution. Her second feature, The Black Forest, a dark comedy, was nominated for the Michael Powell Award for Best British Film at Edinburgh International Film Festival in 2019.
This skin-prickling supernatural story crafts an effectively airless atmosphere of uncanny melancholy. It’s the kind of horror which eschews jump scares in favour of a more subtle, gauzy sense of unease, a slow-burning discomfort that creeps up on the audience like a half-seen shadow’. Screen Daily.
